2002
On April 23, 1993 at 9:00 PM, 17 year old Jamie Grey was abducted from a Littleton, Colorado strip-mall parking lot by a male assailant driving a 1970's Ford dark blue/black four door sedan. There was virtually no evidence, only two witnesses and a vague description of the assailant. Irregardless of several sightings as far off as Texas, Jamie Grey or her abductor have never been found.
The one piece of evidence; a torn page from The Complete Book of Magic and Witchcraft was found near the abduction point, but yielded no prints. The page taken had several spells on it, but the police focused on a love spell that appeared on the page. But, unfortunately, that bit of information did not give them much to go on.
Law enforcement agencies believe that Jamie Grey was abducted by someone who knew her personally, but did not attend her school. Jamie spent several weekends the previous October taking the bus into downtown Denver, to attend an ongoing modeling workshop. Witnesses stated that they saw Jamie conversing with a 'tall, blonde fellow with glasses on numerous occassions during breaks and the lunchhour.' She was also sighted having lunch with this person at least three times during her month-long classes in the downtown area. This connection was the strongest piece of the puzzle, but the man who matched the witnesses descriptions has never been located, nor any connections with the car matching the description that the witnesses provided on April 23.
This piece is inspired by her abduction. Originally, the project was going to encompass some of the police reports, maps, sightings, that had to do with the Jamie Grey case. As I finished the artwork, the family had decided that it was better to not distribute and display the information. We had discussed that if they felt uncomfortable with any aspect of the work, to let me know and I would adhere to their wishes.
Fortunately, they wanted me to still produce the artwork, as they felt it was a proper homage to the tragic incident. They approved of the title, and the style of the art. Surprisingly, Jamie's sister AND her mother really liked the piece, and we're not intimidated or turned off by some of the darker imagery I put in the piece, which I felt, added to the whole look of it.
