2004

There is a popular belief that everyone on Earth is separated from anyone else by no more than six degrees of separation, or six friends of friends of friends. This is a relatively new theory that is eerily accurate - but did it apply to the Gods of Ancient Greece? This body of work analyzes the myths and stories of Aphrodite and her interactions with humans within the Six Degrees of Separation.

I have always found it very interesting that Aphrodite is the Goddess of Love, but you would be hard-pressed to find a more vindictive, sadistic, mean-spirited and selfish character in all of Greek Mythology. Is this one of history's ironies, or is it a reflection of how people really see love? She may be known to mete out affection and manipulate emotions, but if you look a little closer you'll see that when there is love and compassion, there is usually hate and rage boiling beneath the surface.

This piece is the culmination of the emotion of Aphrodite - an inferior indifference amongst her loyal followers. Instead of caressing and caring for the human heart, she holds it out, torn from the chest, still pumping blood with the blasé look of a Goddess who gives little regard to those who worship her. Galatea, Myrrha, Persephone, Calliope and Sappho look on from the shadows as victims of Aphrodite's whims.

This series illustrates the intertwined tales of Aprhodite, Pygmalion and Galatea, Myrrha, Persephone, Calliope and Sappho - with all save one, ending in tragedy. The body of work represents 11 months of planning, researching and executing. It has been incredibly rewarding to work on something of this scope, to find the common thread between the stories and tie them in visually to one theme - challenging and fun, to the very last piece.
