Lovely Death Whistles Thrice is an interpretation of an excerpt from Samuel Taylor Coleridges epic poem Rime of the Ancient Mariner. To those who are not familiar with this poem, it deals with a seaman that shoots an Albatross, which brings good luck to sailors, and his ship becomes lost and the crew dies slowly of starvation and dehydration, while the Mariner continues to live on. Watching his crew die from his actions cause him to go insane, to which he sights a ship. Aboard this ship is a woman and her mate, who is Death. They play a game of dice for the Mariners life, to which the woman wins. Eventually, the Mariner is rescued and the basic moral of the story is to love all creatures and cherish life. This description I have described is so basic, I encourage everyone to give it a read.
This particular piece of work deals with the woman and Death characters. The woman who wins the Mariner is described as beautiful yet frightening, and I found that very interesting. The texture of this piece is chaotic, but the figure heads seem to be serene a madness mixed with tranquility.
