2004

Sappho was a legendary poetess and referred to as the 10th Muse, beyond the 9 others who resided in Greek Mythology. She lived on the island of Lesbos, where the severed head of Calliope's son Orpheus came to rest after the Maenads torn him limb from limb, then enshrined and worshipped by the Lesbian women. The story of Sappho is that she was passionately in love with a beautiful youth named Phaon who would have no part of Sappho. She wrote beautiful poetry about Phaon, who was a faithful and legendary follower of Aphrodite. She longed for Phaon and begged Aphrodite to influence him to return her love. After Aphrodite refused to grant the her wish, Sappho threw herself from the promontory of Leucadia into the sea.

"This piece, Sappho lies somewhere between the ocean and infinity, seemingly dreaming of happier times, yet pondering her own current depression - trying to come to terms with what her decision will be: to live without love, or to die longing for it."
