2005

100 years ago there was a beautiful and stunning woman named Mary who was terribly in love with a man who was married to a portly and homely woman. Despite all of her advances, the dashing young man spurned Mary and held true to his wife, despite her physical shortcomings. One day Mary broke down into tears and begged him to leave his wife, which he refused. Filled with despair, Mary returned to her estate and imbibed nearly a full bottle of Absinthe. In a drunken stupor, she stared at herself in her handheld vanity mirror - questioning what was wrong with her: why didn't this man find her attractive? In a fit of rage she smashed the mirror on her vanity and began to cut her face up. The effect of the Absinthe had numbed her so much, that she did not realize how deeply she had cut herself and upon passing out, she slowly slipped into death's embrace.

Most people know of the old folk tale that If you stand in front of a mirror in the dark and say her name three times, you will see her horribly mangled face appear. This art is based on that old folk tale. I have had the photography for this piece for about a year and it was always on the back burner. Once I had everything cleared from my plate, I was able to start on this new piece - which I knew was going to be a large lithograph - and that is time consuming in itself. The result is the representation of the bloody, shattered Absinthe-influenced vision of Bloody Mary.

Printed on 80+ gloss cover, this lithograph measures 16"x24" and ships rolled.
